Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. When it starts failing, the warning signs are easy to miss — until they become dangerous. Here are the seven signs St. Louis homeowners should never ignore.
1. Breakers That Keep Tripping
A breaker that trips occasionally is doing its job. A breaker that trips repeatedly under normal use — running the microwave, turning on the AC, using your home office — is telling you the circuit is overloaded. This usually means your panel doesn't have enough capacity for your home's current electrical demand. In older St. Louis homes with 100-amp service, this is extremely common.
2. Flickering or Dimming Lights
If lights dim when your AC kicks on or flicker when you run the dryer, you have a voltage drop problem. This happens when your panel can't distribute power evenly across circuits. It's more than annoying — sustained voltage drops can damage appliances and electronics over time.
3. Your Panel Is Over 25 Years Old
The average electrical panel lasts 25 to 40 years. Many St. Louis homes built in the 1970s, 80s, and early 90s still have their original panels. If yours hasn't been inspected in the last decade, it's time. Age alone isn't a reason to replace — but age combined with any other item on this list is.
4. You Have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco Panel
These two panel brands were installed in millions of American homes from the 1950s through the 1980s. Both have documented failure modes where breakers don't trip during overloads — the exact situation they're designed to protect against. If your panel says "Stab-Lok" (Federal Pacific) or "Zinsco," replacement isn't optional. Most Missouri insurance companies won't renew coverage on homes with these panels.
⚠️ Check your panel now: Open the door and look for the brand name. Federal Pacific panels are gray or gray-and-orange. Zinsco panels are often multicolored. If you see either brand — call us.
5. You Smell Burning Near the Panel
A burning smell — even faint — near your breaker box is a serious warning sign. It could mean overheating wiring, a failing breaker, or a loose connection. Any of these can lead to an electrical fire. If you smell burning, don't wait. Call an electrician the same day.
6. You're Adding a Major Appliance or EV Charger
Planning to install a Level 2 EV charger, a hot tub, a new HVAC system, or a home addition? These all require dedicated circuits. If your panel is already near capacity, you'll need an upgrade before the new equipment can be safely installed. We assess panel capacity as part of every EV charger and generator quote.
7. Your Panel Has Breakers with Tape or Labels Saying "Don't Touch"
We see this regularly in St. Louis homes — breakers that have been taped in the ON position because they trip constantly, or hand-written labels warning family members away. This is a sign of a panel that's been jury-rigged to cope with overload. It needs to be properly addressed, not worked around.
